Tuyet Suong Nguyen

Director, Fundraising

I, Tuyết Sương (Susan Nguyễn), have 14 years of experience working in a family physician’s office, from 2000 to 2014. I have always been deeply committed to charitable activities and community service, with a commitment to contribute my part to supporting those in difficult circumstances.

Since 2018, I have been actively involved with the Golden Age Village for the Elderly (GAVE) and its project to build the Tuổi Hạc Village Long-Term Care facility for Vietnamese-Canadian seniors. Through my involvement, I have gained a deeper appreciation for the true value of sharing and compassion for humanity.

As a volunteer, I have been connecting GAVE with generous donors, new volunteers, community organizations, and partners who share the common goal of building a safe, high-quality living environment that honors cultural values for Vietnamese-Canadian seniors.

I am truly honored to accept the role entrusted to me by the GAVE Board of Directors. This role is not only a responsibility, but also a meaningful opportunity for me to contribute more of my time, dedication, and effort for our shared goal. Together with my colleagues at GAVE, I hope to help bring this project to successful completion and create not only a warm, peaceful, and happy home for our seniors in their golden years, but also a lasting legacy for future generations.

Duc Can Diep

Director, Constructions

Duc (Diệp Cần Đức) has been a dedicated volunteer for The Golden Age Village For The Elderly in Ontario since 2014. He has been involved in all GAVE’s fundraising efforts and particularly served as Chair of the Dinner & Dance Gala 2 in 2016 and Co-Chair of Tiếng Hạc Quê Hương 9 in 2024. The overall mission of the Golden Age Village for the Elderly resonates deeply with Duc’s commitment to giving back to the Vietnamese community.

One of Duc’s dreams as a child was to be awarded a scholarship by the Vietnamese government to study abroad. He worked hard, always scored top marks in schools, actively involved in school activities as an editor, a writer for school’s bi-weekly News, an exercise instructor for school and local students and also involved in various charity organizations to help the poor.

Duc was offered admission to the prestigious University of Architecture of Saigon in 1978. However, given the government changeover of that time, he made the difficult decision to decline this offer and to leave Vietnam altogether in search of a better life.

Having taken the role of the Construction Director overseeing the development of the first ever Long-term Care Home, Affordable Living Home and Cultural Centre dedicated to Vietnamese seniors in Ontario, he is proud and excited to join Gave to help in fulfilling its mission and also his passion for architecture in some way.

The rest of his time is spent playing sports, travelling, drawing/sketching and to be with family and friends.

Trinh Lu, B.A

Secretary General

A resident of Brampton since 2006, Trinh is a proud hockey and theatre mom to her two children, a passionate community volunteer, and a dedicated professional with over 15 years of experience in real estate sales and management.

In 2023, Trinh began volunteering with Golden Age Village for the Elderly. She immediately felt a strong sense of belonging and is deeply committed to its mission of establishing Tuổi Hạc Campus of Care – including Tuổi Hạc Village Long-Term Care, Affordable Housing, and a Cultural Center dedicated to Vietnamese seniors in Ontario. As Secretary General, she enjoys working closely with the remarkable Board members and dedicated volunteers to help the organization fulfill its mission.

In her free time, Trinh enjoys reading, singing, traveling with her family, meeting new people, and embracing new cultures and experiences.

Thoai Hoang, B.A.Sc

Director, Operations

Thoai Hoang has been a dedicated volunteer with the Golden Age Village for the Elderly (GAVE) since 2022, actively contributing to the organization’s mission of supporting senior communities. Throughout his involvement, he has taken on various roles, including serving as Co-Chair for the 2023 Spring Fundraising Dance Gala and the Autumn Fundraising Concert.

Before joining the Board of Directors at GAVE, Thoai was a member of the Steering Committee for the 105 Streetsville Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (RCACC), where he contributed to leadership development and community engagement for our youth. In addition, he is an active member of the Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) network, volunteering his expertise to support the Forum for International Trade Training (FITT). His contributions include developing exam practice questions, providing input on training materials, and mentoring student members pursuing careers in international trade.

Thoai holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Toronto. During his time at U of T, he was actively involved in the Vietnamese Student Society, serving as General Secretary (1989-1990, 1992-1993) and Editor-in-Chief of Khai Phong Magazine (1990-1991).

Professionally, Thoai serves as the Manager of Production Planning and Logistics at Hydrogenics – Accelera by Cummins, a leading company in advancing clean energy solutions through hydrogen technology to promote environmental sustainability.

As a member of the Board of Directors at GAVE, Thoai is deeply committed to supporting the organization’s mission. Alongside fellow board members and volunteers, he is dedicated to the establishment of a Campus of Care for the Elderly, ensuring that seniors receive the quality care and resources they deserve.

SiMinh Tran, B.Sc

Board of Director

Born in Hue city, Vietnam, Simon attended Quoc Hoc, admitted to Architecture university of Saigon 1978 until 1982. He left Vietnam as a boat person and arrived in Malaysia, and Paula Bidong on April 30, 1982, and Toronto on July 7, 1982. In 1983, he attended a computer specialist program, and majored in Applied Mathematics at University of Toronto. During his time there, he was also a board member of the Vietnamese Student Association at U of T. In 1987, he started taking correspondence program for class A auto mechanic at Sentinel college. In 1989, he completed his BSc Degree and passed the examination for Class A auto mechanics, Ontario for Truck and Car. He then owned and ran VAT Auto in 1990, which eventually changed to CATEL (CATherin-ELizabeth) Auto Ltd to present. Simon also joined Scout of Canada from 1986 til 1992, as a Scout Leader, assistant in rover group, was in charge of constructing camp Vietnamese Oversea Jamboree Thẳng Tiến II 1988 at Everton, Ontario for over 1,200 participants. In 2009, Simon founded the Catherine Tran Humanitarian Relief Youth and Community Support Group.

For Simon, it’s always an honour to serve the community where you can learn and grow.

Huong PT Nguyen, B.A.Sc

Deputy Treasurer

Huong has been a dedicated volunteer at the Golden Age Village for the Elderly Campus of Care since 2014. Over the years, she has contributed her time and energy to various fundraising events, taking on diverse roles across teams, including the food, decoration, reception, and ticketing teams. Recently, Huong joined the board as Deputy Treasurer.

In her role as Deputy Treasurer, Huong supports budgeting, cash flow tracking, and financial reporting to ensure efficient resource allocation. She collaborates with the finance staff on bookkeeping, payroll, and the development and implementation of financial processes, such as expenditure approvals and tracking fundraising income. She ensures proper fund attribution and prepares transparent financial reports for donors.

Additionally, Huong co-founded the Catherine Tran Humanitarian Relief Youth and Community Support Group. Her goal is to lead a meaningful life by giving back to the community in every way she can.

Huong holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Industrial Engineering from the University of Toronto. She also brings 19 years of experience in construction scheduling and accounts payable from her tenure at The Byng Group.

Linh Nguyen, CPA CA

Treasurer

Linh is a Chartered Professional Accountant with over 17 years of progressive accounting and auditing experience in various industries including not-for-profit and charitable groups. She was the Treasurer for the Vietnamese Association of Toronto for many years and joined the Golden Age Village for the Elderly in 2014. Her prime motivating factors for joining GAVE is to support the worthy cause and give back to the community By participating in the governance of the Golden Age Village for the Elderly, Linh hopes to make a meaningful difference in the community and to use her financial and business acumen in support of a cause in which she believes. In the role of Treasurer, Linh will oversee the financial management and control of the organization including the financial and audit reporting, advise the board on financial strategy and fundraising plan so that the organization can achieve its mission.

Tina Nga Nguyen, B.A

Deputy Secretary General

Tina has been a devoted volunteer with the Golden Age Village for the Elderly from the start and actively contributing to the organization’s mission of supporting the senior communities. Recently she has taken on the role of Deputy of Secretary of GAVE.

Tina holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts with majoring in Economics and Statistic from the University of Toronto. During her time at U of T, she was actively involved in the Vietnamese Student Society, serving as a Treasurer (1992-1994).

Professionally, Tina is an Internal Auditor at BMO Capital Market since 2022. Prior to this, she had over 20 years of experience in Custodian Banking Industry with a strong background and expertise in Capital Market, Process Management, Operations Management and Client Relationship Management.

When she is not at work, she loves to spend time with her loved ones and loves spending time with friends and family at camping trip, ski trip and/or various activities/events.

Quynh Huynh, MD, MSc

Vice Chair, External

Quynh is a Family Physician based in Toronto ON. She completed her medical training at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine along with a Master’s Degree in Systems Leadership and Innovation from the Institute of Health Policy, Management, and Evaluation. She has an interest in addressing upstream and social determinants of health while serving her patients across the life cycle – her patients range from newborns whom she delivers to seniors receiving palliative care at home.

Quynh was involved in the Vietnamese Student Association community while in university. She served on the Board of the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association – Toronto where she was integral in the development and delivery of youth programs promoting leadership development, STEM, and cultural heritage.

Quynh grew up upon the foundation of hard work and sacrifices of her parents who were boat people in the Vietnamese diaspora; their journey is the motivation for her community and professional work.

Van-Hoa Duong, B.Ed

Tanya Thanh-Nha Nguyen, B.Sc

CEO

Tanya has spent the majority of her adult life giving back to the community and helping to affect change in a positive way. She is a community leader, a volunteer, a youth mentor, a scout/girl guide leader, and a dedicated wife and mother of three children.

With over 40 years of volunteerism under her belt, Tanya has garnered many awards and recognitions including the Ontario Provincial Volunteer Award, the City of Vaughan Volunteer Award and has been recognized by the Canada Federal Government, the Vietnamese Women Association Toronto, Girl Guides of Canada and many other organizations. Since 2013, Tanya has been instrumental in the pursuit of the Vietnamese Golden Age Village for the Elderly Campus of Care facility, connecting and holding everyone together from sponsors, to donors, to volunteers, old and young, to other organizations and government bodies, to fundraise and spearhead the project forward.

Professionally, Tanya holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto, has 8 years of IT experience with IBM Canada Lab, and over 20 years in the banking and financial industry with the Royal Bank of Canada.

Ven. Thanh Kim

Chair

The Most Venerable Thích Thiện Tâm is an esteemed Vietnamese Buddhist Monk. Born in Vĩnh Long, Việt Nam, he completed the 4-year Buddhism Studies program at the Institute of Buddhism of Phuoc Hoa and graduated from the Buddhism Teacher program in 1973. He was nominated for the Secretary General position of the Vietnamese Buddhist Delegate Federation of Vinh Binh and launched a public Buddhism program specifically catering to children of Vinh Binh.

In 1988, he left Vietnam as a refugee and arrived in Canada, where he established the Edmonton Institute of Buddhism Studies in 1989 and was instrumental in establishing the Truc Lam Monastery (Edmonton), Tay Thien Monastery (Westlock), Dong Do Temple (Windsor) and Thien Truc Temple (Kelowna). Most Ven. Thien Tam was elected as Chair of the Steering Committee of Vietnamese Unified Buddhist Congregation Of Canada (GHPGVNTN) from 1992 to 2000. Under his guidance and leadership, and with the strong support of not only the Edmonton Vietnamese community but also from the Edmonton and Alberta government, the Edmonton Vietnamese Golden Manor launched in 2008 was a success story for the Vietnamese senior community.

Leveraging the success of Edmonton Golden Manor, Ven. Thien Tam offered to help initiate the Golden Age Village for the Elderly (GAVE) project in Ontario in 2012, and he hasn’t stopped since. He has since been devoting his time and effort to launch the Institute of Buddhism Studies in Dallas in 2011 and the Dallas Vietnamese Golden Manor in 2013. As a Vietnamese refugee, as a Buddhist Monk, and as a compassionate and determined leader, the Venerable Thich Thien Tam will continue to strive for the betterment of the most vulnerable members of the Vietnamese community.
